5 Greatest New Year's Movies to Start the Year Off Right

If you're looking for a way to start your 2023 off right, we have just the thing: a list of some of the best New Year's movies to watch. Here's everything you need to know about these five great flicks and why they're perfect for ringing in the new year.

New Year's Eve (2011)

New Year's Eve (2011) is a romantic comedy that is perfect if you plan on staying on this New Year's Eve. The film was directed by Garry Marshall and stars Sarah Jessica Parker, as well as many other familiar, beloved actors. This movie takes place in New York City and follows several couples as they prepare for their big night on New Year’s Eve.

It is a story about love and friendship among strangers who come together for one special night on New Year's Eve.  In this movie, there are many love triangles as the lives of different characters become intertwined.

If you are looking for a feel-good flick (that also might have you in tears), then New Year’s Eve is one to add to your list.

Carol (2015)

Carol is one of the best New Year's movies to watch with your partner. It's a romantic drama that's set in 1950s New York and tells the story of Carol (Rooney Mara), a shy young woman who works at an upscale department store, and Therese Belivet (Cate Blanchett), a married woman who falls for her.

The movie takes its time establishing its characters' worlds—there isn't much action until about halfway through—but this does help make their love seem more genuine from the start. You'll find yourself getting so invested in their relationship that you'll forget all about how long it takes them to get together!

The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture in 2016.

Phantom Thread (2017)

In this drama, Daniel Day-Lewis plays a fashion designer who's attempting to make and sell his own line of clothing. However, he finds it difficult to deal with the pressures of being an artist and he begins to lose focus on what really matters in life.

This film is one of Paul Thomas Anderson's best works yet. It blends drama with humor very well, making it a great movie that can be enjoyed by all types of audiences.

This memorizing film is perfect for a night in on New Year’s Eve as its cinematography techniques will have you glued to your seat. You may feel as if you are part of the movie instead of watching it, but isn’t that what enjoying movies is all about!?

Diner (1982)

This classic film is about a group of friends who meet regularly at a diner. Taking place in 1959, it’s about friendship and love, but also about the changing times in America.

At this time, the world was moving away from tradition and becoming more modernized, which is something that resonates with us today as well. With an all-star cast featuring Steve Guttenberg, Daniel Stern and Kevin Bacon (among others), you’re sure to enjoy spending some time with this movie during New Year’s!

While You Were Sleeping (1995)

Sandra Bullock stars as a Chicago Transit Authority employee named Lucy, who saves the life of Peter Gallagher's character and falls in love with him. He doesn't know it, though, because he was put in a coma after being hit by a subway train. When he wakes up from his coma and finds out that Lucy has filled in for him at work and is now engaged to his brother (Bill Pullman), Peter is both relieved and nervous about what will happen next.

The movie explores how difficult it can be for two people who love each other to relate when their lives are so different. It also shows how hard it is for Lucy to keep up her lies without letting her true feelings show through. While You Were Sleeping has enough charm and humor to make this an enjoyable watch, so it’s the perfect feel-good movie to kick-start 2023!
