Craving the urge to have a good cry as you munch through a king-size butter popcorn? Hey, it happens and we don’t judge! Or maybe you are looking for a way to relive your most upsetting break up, again… this is no judge zone.
Whatever reason you have for wanting to dive into depressing, sad movies, we get it! Here is a list of 7 of the most heartbreaking movies that are sure to get the waterworks going in no time.
Movie #1: My Girl
First, on our sad movie list, we have My Girl. Many will remember this film from their childhood. This movie will both warm and break your heart at once, don’t say you haven’t been warned!
This movie is about Vada, an 11-year-old who is dealing with her mother’s passing who died while giving birth to her and has subsequently developed an obsession with death. This coming-of-age drama follows the story of Vada, who is seen as an outcast by her peers and her unlikely best friend Thomas. Between being in love with her English teacher, and dealing with the grim reality of the twists and turns of her life, what can go wrong?
Movie #2: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
One of the most saddest movies in our opinion is Gomez-Rejon’s Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. This is one of those movies that sneaks up on you. The title may give away some hint that it is an emotional movie, but once you get sucked in by Greg Gaines, who spends most of his time making quirky parody movies with his friend Earl it is easy to forget that this movie is really about death and acceptance.
Once the pair befriend Rachel, who has recently been diagnosed with leukemia, they go through lots of ups and downs together that make their friendship everlasting and meaningful.
Movie #3: The Titanic
The Titanic is an iconic movie that is equally historically important as it is heartbreaking, and one that most will be familiar with. This sad, depressing movie features on most “top 10 saddest movies” lists, and for good reason.
17-year-old Rose DeWitt Bukater comes from a well-off, aristocratic family and falls in love with working-class Jack Dawson on the ship. Their time together is cut short on the “unsinkable” ship as they fall victim to ice-cold temperatures and woeful conditions.
If you are looking for one of the most globally known heartbreaking movies that will have you weeping, this is the one for you. This tragic romance will have your popcorn extra salty and damp from your floods of tears… we promise.
Movie #4: Marley & Me
We don’t know about you, but any movie about a dog is a success for us! However, don’t jump into Marley & Me expecting a light-hearted tale (pun intended), and a happy ending, because you will not find it here.
This is among the most heartbreaking movies as it follows the story of John and Jenny, who are newly married and decide to start their family by adopting a puppy. Their new pup, Marley, is a free spirit and lives life on his own terms. Although the pair struggle with raising Marley at times, he holds a huge place in their hearts and becomes irreplaceable to the Grogan family.
Tensions become high as Marley grows older and falls ill, leaving both the Grogans and the audience heartbroken and sobbing.
Movie #5: Loving Vincent
Love art legends? If so, you will love this animated biography-style movie about Vincent Van Gogh, misunderstood and tortured, this story relives the artist’s life portraying his insufferable journey of mental illness through his genius work.
This heartbreaking movie gives the audience an insight into the sorrows and tough experiences of Van Gogh’s existence and inevitably to his suicide at the young age of 37. Movie #6: My Sister’s Keeper
Some may argue that My Sister’s Keeper is one of the most saddest movies ever, and we are not ones to disagree. This heartbreaking tale follows the story of Anna, played by Cameron Diaz, who is being forced to donate her organs to save her sister’s life by her parents. As they navigate how to cope with the possibility of their family falling apart they go on a journey of discovery that takes many unexpected turns.
