5 Funniest Black Comedy Movies
Black comedy is a genre that has always been with us and will always be with us (thankfully!) For black comedies, the traditional "laughing at" or "laughing with" is replaced by laughing "with them." This style of comedy typically features dark humor and satire that pokes fun at real-world situations (usually from the point of view of an outsider). Black comedy can also explore taboo subjects like race, class, gender and death in ways that create laughter and provoke thought about serious issues. So, here are 5 of the funniest black comedy movies to enjoy!
Boomerang (1992)
The film is set in 1963 and follows Eddie Murphy as Marcus Graham, a man who finds out his father was a pimp. After being told of this by his mother (Halle Berry), Marcus sets out to prove himself as a respectable businessman but loses everything when he's caught up in the murder of one of his best friends (Terry Hatcher). In order to help with bail money for Hatcher, Marcus goes back into the business after nearly 20 years away from it.
The cast also includes Martin Lawrence and Clarence Williams III. The movie was directed by Reginald Hudlin, and is one you shouldn’t miss!
Bad Boys (1995)
Bad Boys is a 1995 action film directed by Michael Bay and stars Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Téa Leoni, Peter Greene and Kevin Pollak. The film follows two Miami narcotics detectives on the trail of two Ecstasy pushers that are connected to the murder of an undercover cop. While Bad Boys has a strong supporting cast, including Téa Leoni (who went on to star in TV's "Scandal"), Peter Greene (who was in many Quentin Tarantino films) and Kevin Pollak (also featured in Tarantino movies), it's really all about Smith and Lawrence's chemistry as they play off each other with their different personalities.
Deliver Us From Eva (2003)
You'll love Deliver Us From Eva if you're a diehard Christian or just looking for a movie that will make you laugh. Eva is a woman who has lost her faith in God and has turned to stripping as an outlet for her frustrations. Her best friend, Crystal, is also a stripper, but she remains faithful to God while doing so. They both have their own ideas about how things are supposed to work out and how they should behave when it comes to their careers, relationships and spirituality - but when circumstances force them together, they learn some valuable lessons about life's unexpected twists and turns.
Girls Trip (2017)
The Flossy Posse, a group of four close pals, has become estranged over time. However, one of the pals decides to take her friends along when she gets the chance to speak as the keynote speaker at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, turning her work trip into a girls' weekend. They revive their wild side along the road through excessive dancing, drinking, fighting, and romancing. The movie stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, and Regina Hall as Sasha, Lisa and Dina. Grab your girlfriends and prepare to cry with laughter; you will not be disappointed!
Harlem Nights (1989)
In Harlem Nights, Eddie Murphy plays Jimmy "The Rev" Martin, a nightclub owner who is challenged by gangsters to put on a show. The film also stars Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx, who play Martin's father and uncle, respectively. Della Reese also appears in the film as Martin's mother-in-law.
Harlem Nights was directed by Eddie Murphy and released in 1989. It was made during the height of Murphy's early career success before he started playing more serious roles like Dr Dolittle (1998) or Shrek 2 (2004).
