Best Thanksgiving Movies
The holidays are a time for gathering with friends and family—and watching some of the best Thanksgiving movies while devouring those leftovers! If you're looking for an easy way to feel the holiday spirit while you stay cozy inside, these movies will do the trick. Here are six of the best Thanksgiving movies to watch this year;
Free Birds (2013)
The first Thanksgiving film to make the list is Free Birds. This animated film, which was released in 2013, tells the story of two turkeys from opposite sides of a feud who travel back in time to change history and ensure that humans and turkeys can live together peacefully. The movie is a lot of fun and has a great message about friendship and the importance of family. It’s also pretty funny, with some very clever jokes thrown in throughout the film.
Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
This is a great movie for the whole family to enjoy around Thanksgiving because it's funny, but also has a heartwarming message about love and family. It stars Robin Williams as Daniel Hillard, who loves his three children so much that he dresses up as an elderly Scottish nanny named "Mrs. Doubtfire" so that he can spend more time with them after his divorce from their mom (played by Sally Field). Mrs. Doubtfire is an utter classic, and if your kids haven’t been introduced to it yet, then what better time than Thanksgiving!?
Little Women (1994)
Little Women is based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott and tells the story of the March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. After their father leaves for war, they’re left to fend for themselves in Concord, Massachusetts. When he returns home after seven years, it’s up to Meg and Jo to help him re-adjust to life at home while dealing with their own romantic struggles—and that’s only part of what happens in this movie!
Of course, the coming-of-age movie was remade in 2019 to include some current iconic female leads such as Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh and Emma Watson.
The Blind Side (2009)
This is one of those feel-good movies where you just feel that everything will work out for the characters in the end. Sandra Bullock plays Leigh Anne Tuohy, a wealthy Southern woman who finds Michael Oher living on the streets and takes him in to live with her family. The film shows how he eventually becomes a successful football player at Ole Miss and later goes on to play for the Baltimore Ravens.
This movie is said to be one of the most inspiring ever made, and still to this day Sandra Bullock and Quinton Aaron are praised for their amazing performances.
Dutch (1991)
Dutch is a film about a man who is in love with his best friend's wife. The movie was released in 1991 and stars Ed O'Neill, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Peter Gallagher.
The story follows the character Dutch as he tries to win over his friend's wife while also attempting to avoid being caught by her husband. When it comes to Thanksgiving movies you can't go wrong with one that includes all of these elements: adventure, comedy, drama—and most importantly—love!
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973)
One of the best Thanksgiving movies is A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. This movie shows the Peanuts gang preparing for the holiday, with some amusing results. The film was created by Bill Melendez and originally aired on CBS on November 20, 1973. It has been broadcast every year since then, making it one of only two prime-time animated specials to air annually every year during their original run (the other being Rankin-Bass' Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer). The special was nominated for several Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Animated Program; it won the award for Outstanding Children's Program at those same ceremonies.
