Best Winter Movies

Winter is one of our favorite seasons, and there is nothing we love more than spending time indoors with a good, gripping movie. So, in this post, we’ve gathered some of the best winter movies. From comedies to thrillers, you're sure to find something that will entertain you through the coldest days of the year!

Fargo (1996)

Fargo is a 1996 dark comedy crime film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It stars Frances McDormand as a pregnant Minnesota police chief investigating murders linked to a petty car salesman. Colin Hanks plays her inexperienced son, who helps in the investigation. The film also features other loved stars like Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, Ed Helms and Harve Presnell.

The film received critical acclaim, was nominated for several awards and has developed a cult following, so much so that its popularity led to a four-season tv series premiering in 2014. If you are looking for something more quirky, then make sure to check out the epic tv series too!

The Frozen Ground (2013)

If you're searching for a movie that's true to life, this is the one for you. The Frozen Ground is based on real events and stars John Cusack as a police detective who works with Nicolas Cage's character—an ex-convict who eventually helps track down the killer. Released in 2013, this movie takes place in Alaska and follows the story of serial killer Robert Hansen (portrayed by Cage) as he hunts down his victims in cold weather conditions. This one is chilling, which makes it the perfect winter watch.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Miracle on 34th Street stars Maureen O'Hara and Natalie Wood and was released in 1947. The movie is about a young girl who believes in Santa Claus—and when her parents hire him for their store window display, he proves to be more than just a jolly old elf. She's not the only one who thinks he might be real: with Christmas approaching, people all over New York City are looking for proof that Kris Kringle really does exist! Miracle on 34th Street is perfect for anyone who craves a bit of Christmas joy, so matter how “early” it may be into the winter season!

Home Alone (1990)

Home Alone is a 1990 American comedy film written and produced by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus. It stars Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, an eight-year-old boy who is mistakenly left behind when his family flies to Paris for their Christmas vacation. After encountering several mishaps involving his neighbor, the Wet Bandits Harry Lyme (Joe Pesci) and Marv Merchants (Daniel Stern), Kevin manages to thwart them with help from a number of other children in his neighborhood.

The film was named after the English translation of a French poster titled La Maison Assiégée (The House under Siege) and since the movie has spawned two sequels; Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) and Home Alone 3 (1997) (but there nothing quite like the original classic). Did you know that the house shown in this movie actually exists in Winnetka, Illinois where Hughes grew up!?

The Revenant

The Revenant is a 2015 American epic western thriller film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, a frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in 1823. The cast is awesome and includes Tom Hardy, Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson. The story is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Punke, which is definitely worth a read if you enjoy a good page-turner. The movie was nominated for 12 Academy Awards (winning 3), including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Leo)!
